about
In 1852 there was a flood in Gundagai that stands as one of Australia’s worst. It killed close to 100 people and would have been more except for two aboriginal men, Yarrie and Jacky Jacky, who rescued around 40 people in their canoe’s. A few years ago, I wrote and recorded this song imagining that story from a child’s innocent view.
On starting the town of Gundagai, the settlers were warned of flooding by the indigenous owners of the land.
It's right alongside the Murrumbidgee river,
which means Big Water…
or flood plain.
How amazing then that when their predictions came true these first nations people reached out their hand, in what's thought to be one of earliest gestures of reconciliation, and saved the townspeople from the catastrophe of their own making.
I know I’m not the best person to tell this story but it needs to be told.
So next time you pass Gundagai think of the story of Yarrie and reconciliation rather than fast food and a dog on a box.
